Printmaker, painter, pioneer art educationalist and war artist, Evelyn Gibbs (1905 – 1991) was one of the first women to win the coveted Prix de Rome for Engraving, in 1929.
This series of etchings of rock formations were made in Evelyn Gibbs’ London Studio during the 1960s.
Since 1963 Evelyn had been making prints using a large etching press that had belonged to her former tutor at the Royal College of Art, Malcolm Osborne. Produced mostly on copper plates, most of the pieces on show are etching and aquatint prints with a deep bite.

During Evelyn’s lifetime these prints were exhibited at the Drian Gallery, London, Bristol’s Forum Gallery, Ivan Spence Gallery, Ibiza and at the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers (of which she was a member) and at the Midland Group Gallery, Nottingham. Most recently one was shown at last year’s London Original Print Fair. Several prints were sold to Editions Alecto.
