The Prism of Memory deals with the themes of private, public and personal memory, it will in part be an exploration of the artist’s personal memories and how that inspires the depiction of them but also an attempt to reconcile memory and it’s loss, how we deal with this when it affects a loved one and the doors that open to that personal world even in spite of this. This Retrospection and it’s depiction are also inspired by both words and music’s ability to transfer us through time, this forms a large part of the inspiration behind the works.
Each piece is accompanied by text either from the artists own writing or from other sources (lyrics, quotations etc) to inform the starting point of each work, building a relationship between words and visuals, to help inform the viewer of the context of each memory initially at least. Looking at the relationship between reason and inspiration through the prism of memory are themes which have long fascinated the artist. The act of practice in remembrance as part of the works process. The everyday personal memories can form the kernel of an idea or theme which can explode with colour and light.
Alongside this the connection of music and memory and their implicit interplay will also be examined thematically. The essence of memory and it’s impact on the creative process is the core theme of the works. Memories are the anchor of culture, thoughts, feelings and freedoms. This anchorage is a way to move forward with an identity that acknowledges that every human heart is the same. If nostalgia loosens these moorings then the ultimate answer to this question is harmony.
The works are all 2D and are mixed media in their concept, often moving between the traditional and digital realms. Texture and layering is explored throughout the works to reflect the ideas and themes of memory and its multi facetted forms.
