Recent static and kinetic sculptures

Skip a beat and move with my body, yeah, Slow

Will Hughes was awarded one of our Arts Council England Artist Development Bursaries in September 2018. He's showing his work in our cafe-bar area throughout November.

Will Hughes is a contemporary artist based in Bristol. He's the 2018 winner of the Kenneth Armitage Foundation Graduate Award and fellow at Spike Island, Bristol.

Will is a conceptual artist, using sculpture and illustration to explore personal experiences. He aims to create work which is sensual and seductively human, using levels of understanding built into the work to allow for connection beyond the visual. Materials are chosen because of the language which is inherent in the medium, visual effect and touch. The titles of the works are very important; they are taken from pop music as well as the wider queer community. The titles act as a way point giving the viewer the first clue for deciphering the work.

"I will be showing a number of recent sculptures that I have produced from my time at University. These include static and Kinetic sculptures. The pieces are based around my own person experiences and often take on themes relating to the body and mental health with a seductive aesthetic and dark undertones.

The themes of this work very much relate to my upbringing in Rutland and living just 25 miles from Leicester. I now live in Bristol after my graduation from my degree but the East Midlands is somewhere i visit regularly and have great affection for as my family still live here."
